History of Wat Athvea Temple
Wat Athvea was constructed in the 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II, the same king who built Angkor Wat. Because of this, the temple shares many architectural similarities with Angkor Wat-style design.
The temple was originally dedicated to Hindu worship, likely for Vishnu, and served as a provincial religious site outside the main Angkor capital.
Over time, the site became a place of continued worship. A modern Buddhist pagoda was later built next to the ancient ruins, showing the transition of religious practices in Cambodia from Hinduism to Buddhism.
Although the temple is partially unrestored, its sandstone carvings and layout still reflect the elegance of classic Angkor architecture.
