History of Prasat Totung Thngai
Prasat Totung Thngai was built in the 10th century, during the early Angkor period when the Roluos area was an important political and religious center of the Khmer Empire.
The temple was likely dedicated to Hindu worship, following the common tradition of early Khmer rulers who built small brick sanctuaries for spiritual and royal purposes.
Unlike larger temples such as Bakong or Preah Ko, Totung Thngai was likely a smaller community or auxiliary shrine connected to the wider temple network of the Roluos capital.
Over time, the temple was abandoned, and nature gradually reclaimed much of the structure. Today, only fragments of brick and laterite remain, but they still show traces of ancient Khmer craftsmanship.
The site remains an important reminder of how widespread temple construction was during the early growth of the Khmer Empire.
