Prasat Prei Monti

Prasat Prei Monti is a small but fascinating ancient temple located in the Roluos Group, southeast of Siem Reap. Often overshadowed by its famous neighbors—Bakong, Preah Ko, and Lolei—this peaceful temple offers visitors a quiet and uncrowded experience of early Khmer architecture.

Built during the early Angkor period, Prasat Prei Monti is known for its three brick towers set on a laterite base, surrounded by trees and countryside scenery. The temple reflects the transition between pre-Angkorian and classical Angkor architecture, making it an important stop for history lovers exploring the Roluos area.

Unlike the larger and more restored temples nearby, Prei Monti remains partly in ruins, giving visitors a raw and authentic feeling of ancient Khmer heritage.

History of Prasat Prei Monti

Prasat Prei Monti

Prasat Prei Monti is believed to date back to the mid 9th century, during the early formation of the Khmer Empire when Hariharalaya became one of the first major capitals in the Angkor region.

The temple reflects the early development of Khmer religious architecture, built during a period when brick towers and simple sanctuary layouts were commonly used before the rise of large sandstone temple mountains like Bakong.

Prei Monti likely served as a small Hindu shrine connected to the growing network of temples in the Roluos area. Although less documented than major temples such as Bakong or Preah Ko, it represents an important piece of the early Angkorian religious landscape.

Over time, the temple was abandoned and gradually reclaimed by nature. Today, only the remaining brick towers and foundations survive, surrounded by trees and quiet countryside, preserving its ancient and peaceful character.
