History of Baphuon Temple
Baphuon was constructed around 1060 as the royal state temple of King Udayadityavarman II. It originally stood as a towering pyramid representing Mount Meru, the sacred center of the universe in Hindu mythology. Over the centuries, its heavy sandstone structure began to collapse, leading to extensive restoration work—one of the largest archaeological reconstruction projects ever completed in Angkor.
A massive reclining Buddha, more than 70 meters long, was added during the 15th century when the Khmer Empire shifted from Hinduism to Buddhism.
