Ak Yum Temple is one of the oldest and most historically important temples in the Angkor region of Cambodia. Hidden near the southern side of West Baray reservoir, this ancient temple predates the famous Angkor Wat by several centuries and represents one of the earliest examples of Khmer pyramid temple architecture.
Unlike the grand temples on the main Angkor circuit, Ak Yum remains quiet and rarely visited, making it a perfect destination for travelers seeking hidden archaeological sites and authentic countryside experiences around Siem Reap.
Although much of the temple is in ruins today, Ak Yum played an important role in the early development of Khmer architecture and religious design. Historians believe the temple later became partially buried during the construction of the massive West Baray reservoir in the 11th century.
Today, visitors can explore the peaceful ruins surrounded by trees, local villages, and rice fields while learning about the early history of the Khmer Empire.

History of Ak Yum Temple
Ak Yum Temple dates back to the 8th or early 9th century, making it one of the earliest temple mountains in Cambodia. The temple was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and is believed to have been an important religious center before the rise of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom.
Historians consider Ak Yum a key transitional monument in Khmer architecture because it helped inspire the later pyramid-style temples built during the Angkor period.

During the 11th century, the construction of West Baray dramatically changed the surrounding landscape. Parts of Ak Yum were partially buried or affected as the enormous reservoir was built under King Suryavarman I and King Udayadityavarman II.
French archaeologists later rediscovered and studied the site in the 20th century. Although much of the original structure has collapsed, visitors can still see sandstone blocks, laterite foundations, terraces, and traces of the temple pyramid design.
Today, Ak Yum remains an important archaeological site for understanding the origins of Khmer temple architecture.
